In homes that are occupied the best way to do this dusty, dirty job is to move furniture out of a couple of rooms at a time and once those rooms are done and painted move on to a couple more rooms. Doing the job this way makes it much easier to cover and protect flooring and walls with drop cloths and plastic. Doors can also be covered with plastic to contain dust to the work areas.
